Our babywearing journey

We started wearing JJ when he was still a newborn.  Before I gave birth, I have already read so many articles about babywearing and its benefits. So I decided that I would wear him even until he reaches toddlerhood.

We started with a super shorty baby wrap, about 2 yards so I could only do a rebozo wrap. Our super shorty is a DIY.

I also bought a ring sling that was on sale on Lazada but the fabric was a bit not recommended. I had to adjust him from time to time. Though it was on ring sling where I first experienced breastfeeding while babywearing.

With babywearing, I was able to go out with my two kids. We were able to buy some stuff from the department store. I could also hold my first born. 🙂

Then I tried a full wrap. I made a DIY babywrap, size 6 i think. I can do full length wraps with it. But my favorite is a front wrap cross carry.

The FWCC is so comfortable. Coming from a one-shoulder carry, FWCC is a win! I can wrap him all by myself and my shoulders are very relaxed. The picture above was the first time I tried FWCC. I was at work that time. 🙂 I was so proud I had to go to my hubby’s office to show him my achievement!

I just find it hard to breastfeed with FWCC because I have to jump a little to lower him. So I prefer using a sling when breastfeeding. Not until we bought a soft-structured carrier by QB Collection.

The SSC is now my favorite when it comes to breastfeeding. But I still prefer wrapping him using our full length wrap that I made. It’s just that, I feel that babywrapping is a skill. And I’m very proud everytime I wrap him.

IMPORTANT NOTES ON BABYWEARING

It is important to achieve optimal position when babywearing in order to maximize its benefits.  Here are some pictures to show how to achieve optimal position in different carriers.

Wrap

Wrap

There are many wraps that you can buy. You can even make your own. Some of the brands that are made locally are QB (Baguio-based) and Ubba (Ilocos-based).  International brands that are popular include Lenny Lamb, Little Frog, Didymos,Oscha and Heartiness.

Ring Sling

Ring Sling

Ring Sling is easy to use.  It is just a cloth with a ring on one end.  Personally, I recommend ring sling for newborns and infants.  Since this is a one-shoulder carrier, as your baby gains weight, more pressure is put on your shoulders.

Next9 sells ring slings.  I have a generic ring sling and I think I have to change the fabric because it slides when worn.

Soft Structured Carrier

Soft Structured Carrier

Soft structured carriers (SSCs) are easy to use. No knotting. Just put in on and put your baby inside. That’s it. Just make sure that the SSC you choose is not a narrow-based carrier (NBC) because NBCs can contribute to hip dysplasia. With NBCs, the pressure is on the hips of the baby unlike the wide-based carriers where the pressure on hips is minimal as the legs are spread and supported.

Popular SSCs are Tula, Lenny Lamb and Ergo.  Locally, we have QB Collection.  There are many other brands. Whether expensive or not, what matters is that the carrier you have is ergonomic.

Mei Tai

Mei Tai

Mei Tais are not that popular here in our country.  It is like a soft structured carrier but without the buckles. Some of the brands available locally are Nakong and Bubba Tai.

Also, not all carriers are fitted to all ages.  Here are the charts so you can choose properly.
