The Five Languages of Love

I have been married for nine years, and I thought I already knew what I have to know about love few years after marriage.  I was sort of complaining to my husband, directly or indirectly, on why he isn’t very expressive of his love for me and his children.  I was always asking him “Do you love me?” “Am I the only one?” “How much do you love me?” because for me, I cannot feel his love.  I always tell him that I love him, how much I love him, and that he’s the only for me.  I always tell him that he may be imperfect but he is the perfect one to be my husband.  And he doesn’t tell me those things, which came to a point that I didn’t understand why.  He’s even the type that doesn’t give material things as gifts nor any surprises.

It was only last year that I learned that there are five languages of love.  It was him who gave me the test to find out what my love language is.  He got it from one of his subjects in his master’s degree.  So I took the test and we compared.  Mine came out as words of affirmation and physical touch.  His came out at acts of service and quality time.  That’s the time when I understood that he shows his love for us by cooking meals, driving us wherever we want to go, buying us what we need, etc.  He shows his love by spending time with us even if it’s just a movie day at home where he will cook popcorn for all of us and buy our drinks.

All this time, I thought people express their love by telling them how much they love them or frequently telling them “I love you.”  I was wrong.  I would have been upset until now had I not known the five languages of love.

Here is an image I got from Facebook explaining the different languages (pardon the wrong spelling of receiving):

And as I observe our kids, our first-born is also service and our second-born is words of affirmation.

The five languages of love does not only apply on how you show your love for someone but also how you expect people to show their love for you.  And apparently, we were not making both feel loved.  But my husband started to tell me words of affirmation and me…well, I’m getting there in serving him, just give me more time. 😀

Hope you’ll all have meaningful relationships by knowing your love language.
